How to Choose Your Range Hood

The smell of a great meal cooking brings family and friends together; however, the wonderful aromas often come with grease, moisture, smoke and excess heat that you likely don't want in your house. The solution is a range hood. Range hoods are appliances positioned above the cooking surface that use fans to move the cooking fumes out of the kitchen and prevent them from being deposited onto surfaces such as your cabinets. Ferguson sells a variety of styles of range hoods to suit various kitchen layouts. Features vary by range hood, many offer integrated lighting, variable fan speeds, automatic sensing and more; check the "Details and Dimensions" section of the product page for each range hood's specific features.

Range Hood Styles

Under Cabinet Range

Under Cabinet

As the name implies, this style of range hood attaches directly to the underside of the cabinet directly above your cooking surface. Depending on the model chosen this style can be ducted to the outside or non-ducted.

Wall Mount Range

Wall Mount

A wall mount range hood is installed to the wall above your cooking surface. For this style your kitchen would need to be free of cabinets above the cooking surface. You will find models with decorative chimney's or a soffit, and will require an outside duct.

Down Draft Range

Down Draft

A downdraft ventilation is most often used for kitchens where the cooking surface is on an island or peninsula, where a wall mount or under cabinet instillation isn't possible. With this style the vent sits below the surface of the cabinet and is brought up when cooking. The smoke, steam etc. are pulled horizontally across the cooking surface and are then vented down below through the cabinet and out through a basement. One of the major benefits of this style is that there is nothing above the cooking surface to block views.

Island Range

Island

An island range hood is mounted directly to the ceiling above an island or peninsula cooking surface, there may or may not be cabinets around the hood affixed to the ceiling. This style requires an outside duct.
