Wall Sconce Basics

Wall Sconces

Lighting helps determine the mood and atmosphere you want to create in a room as well as the way the room functions. A wall sconce provides warmth and adds intimacy, especially when installed with a dimmer switch to control the intensity of light. The soothing indirect light also creates dramatic effects on walls.

A sconce can be used as a point of interest on a wall. It visually expands a room by providing up-light and ambient light to the upper reaches of a room where the lighting is dim. They are a hotter light and combined with the cool light of up-lights creates a beautiful balance of lighting.

Use them as a complement to recessed down-lighting, and place them where they appear aesthetically balanced in the room. In a bathroom or foyer, install sconces on either side of a mirror for a shadow-free and even illumination. A good choice for living rooms is to flank a fireplace or built-in bookcases with sconces. The recommended mounting height is 66" from the center of the sconce to the floor.
